To be honest i started this project with a certain amount of trepidation, i understood the principal behind artist and object but was really unsure as to how to start or where i would end up.The initial research was interesting as Lawrence Weiner is someone i had never heard of and so was not sure what to expect.When i was given the object chair i was unsure of what to do with it and so decided to brainstorm, from this i began to form a clearer idea as to the potential of the project and just how far it could expand. The artist uses text as a basis for his work, this is at odds with my general style which is a lot more illustration based. Although i do use language and text in my work it is not solely based in typography. One of the most important and fundamental finds during my research into my artist was that he created the 'Declaration of Intent' this being;
1)The artist may construct a piece.
2)The piece may be fabricated.
3)The piece need not be built.
'Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the receivership'
My interpretation of this is that the work is as much about the ideas as the final piece. It is also about the relationship between the artist and their audience, and taking into account that every person will view a piece through different eyes. My ideas have grown and developed in the last few days, i have come at this project from a different angle than i normally would have, as i have to be mindful of things like keeping my link to the artist without it becoming pastiche. I have decided not to use the chair as an object as i firmly believe that Weiner would not have done this he would have used the word or associated words instead. My idea consists of using places where i have sat and using the emotions that i felt there as titles for the images that i intend to produce. I want to take a series of images, these will consist of close up photographic images of materials or fabrics that have been presnet on the chairs that i have used. The piece will have two parts firstly the images and their titles and secondly a list that will comprise of a letter, a place, a position and an emotion. I hope that by combining the two methods and pieces that i will be able to capture the essence of both the artist and the object.
